"Boy with Beer" is a stageplay that explores power dynamics, prejudice, and unconditional love between two Black gay men in 1990s London.

The drama follows Karl, a 27-year-old Ghanaian photographer, and Donovan, a 21-year-old Afro-Caribbean van driver who struggles with self-acceptance. They meet by chance in a nightclub, and their relationship becomes complex and turbulent, filled with lies, manipulation, and physical confrontations. However, despite Donovan's tough exterior and lack of self-love, he has a sensitive soul that yearns to be free.

Through Karl's patience, emotional maturity, and unconditional care, Donovan begins to transform, discovering his self-worth, sharing his secrets, and learning how to love himself and another man. The play is set against the backdrop of 1990s Britain, a time of sexual tensions, HIV fears, and homophobia within society and the Black community. Yet, despite these challenges, "Boy with Beer" is ultimately a story about hope, healing, and the transformative power of love.

Initially produced in 1992 to critical acclaim, the play highlights themes of self-love, machismo, social pressures, and the inner conflicts many gay men face. It is an impactful and timely story that resonates with audiences of all ages and backgrounds in places as far-flung as South Africa, San Francisco, London, and elsewhere. Add it to your bookshelf!
